My dear friend Rachel Edwards is a bit awesome. Not only is she an editor at Island Magazine, Tasmania’s premier literary publication, she’s a radio star and ace bookshop manager. She’s also an absolute bottomless pit of information about all things literary. So if she says a poet is awesome, you listen.
But it isn’t just Rachel raving about Burmese poet, Zeyar Lynn. He’s generally thought of as the best poet in Burma. He’s also an accomplished translator, of such luminaries as Sylvia Plath, Wisława Szymborska, Donald Justice, John Ashbery and Charles Bernstein, and he’s a literary critic too.
So, when you get a chance to have a poet like this at your conference, you naturally jump at it.
Island Magazine are trying! They are partnering with Air Asia and the Asia Pacific Writers and Translators Conference ‘Reaching the World’ to bring Zeyar to the conference, in Bangkok, in November. This would be a wonderful coup for the conference, allowing this highly-regarded poet to speak to a broad audience.
Island are trying to raise funds to allow Zeyar to attend the conference, and they need your help! The following is from their Facebook page:
“Island is pleased to be partnering with Air Asia and the Asia Pacific Writers and Translators Conference ‘Reaching the World’ to bring Burmese, poet, critic, writer and translator, Zeyar Lynn to the conference in Bangkok in November. To do this we are seeking donations from Island supporters for the small amount of $600AUD.
Zeyar Lynn is widely regarded as the most influential living poet in Burma and his poem Sling Bag appeared in Island 128:Digitalism. Zeyar has written a series of poetry collections an…
d he has translated, among others, Sylvia Plath, Wisława Szymborska, Donald Justice, John Ashbery and Charles Bernstein. He has also written a number of volumes on poetics.
Fiction editor Rachel Edwards will also participate in the conference, in discussions about the merits of literary prizes. She is a judge for the 2013 Tasmanian Literary Prizes.
To make a donation for Zeyar’s flight and accomodation call Rachel on 0409 344 679, or the Island office (we’re there on Fridays) on 6226 2325 or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org – and we’ll call you!”
If you’re able to, Island would be so grateful for your donations. If you’re not in a position to donate money, please share the information with your friends.
If you’re a fan of poetry, please take the time to help Rachel, Island and Zeyar in this worthwhile cause.
