On the first day of 2012 …

I had good intentions (don’t we all), but the first day of 2012 didn’t go exactly as planned. I HAD Intended to begin work on the final book in the Thyla cycle and, to be fair, I did jot down a few notes, go for a walk to “think” and figured out the crux of the climactic scene but …

Put fingers to keyboard I did not.

Why?

Well, there was a certain baby called George who has the cutest smile in the Southern hemisphere …

And there was also an old, dear friend called Julia and her darling husband Ryan …

And there was a still-on-holiday mode Husband Bear …

AND there was so much sunshine …

ANNNNDDDD a monkey park …

AAAAAANNNNNNNNDDDDD a picnic area featuring a small tent and a blankie just big enough for aforementioned Georges, Julias, Ryans, HBs and Katies …

and so …

The first day of 2012 didn’t go exactly as planned.

I did have a brief flutter of the guilts. But then I remembered my new year’s resolution. Which was just one word:

Chill.

I’m very, very bad at “chilling”. My dad has it down pat. He spends entire days surrounded by newspapers and books, with Jimmy Buffett on the stereo and not an ounce of guilt in his heart but me? If I spend five minutes doing something “unproductive” I get fidgety.

Going to the park is unproductive.

Making silly faces at baby Georges is unproductive.

Spending an hour trying to throw fallen acorn thingies into a ginger beer bottle is DEFINITELY unproductive. But you know what? I loved it.

And tomorrow, you know what? I’m going to spend the last day of HB’s holiday with him. I’ll start work again on the 3rd, the same day he does. Because moments with friends and lovely babies and loveliest HB’s aren’t wasted at all. They’re precious. I have all year to work.

For now … I’m just going to channel the old Parrothead himself. And, in the words of Jimmy B, I’m just going to “Breathe in, breathe out, move on…” because (to steal his wonderful words again): “It’s important to have as much fun as possible while we’re here. It balances out the times when the minefield of life explodes.”

Now, I’m off to find myself another sunbeam.
