The Real Daisy Blue Part 9: Becak and batik battling

Becak
Becak

Today we took one of these -> <PICTURE OF A TRAIN> from Solo to Yogyakarta. Yogya is so excellent! It is just like Kuta with none of the hype, annoying alligators or dirt. That is to say, it’s nearly perfect. NEARLY as good as Ubud! Oh by the way, when I say no annoyances I forgot about the million & one ‘becak‘ drivers (a becak is a little bicycle with a carriage on front), who yell “Yes, OK, Becak, yes, OK, RP1000 for one hour, yes, OK, to Ramayana? Yes, OK, 500 rupiah!” etc. But you learn to ignore them. Our hotel is OK (yes, OK…) and we have found a great warung called Bu Darti’s to eat at and….. WE FOUND RUTH!!! She is going to Jakarta tonight so we had one last tea together (again). It was great to see her but now we have to say goodbye again. Gee I hate goodbyes!

Batik
Batik

Today Richard and I took a batik-making course at “Lucy’s Batik”. It was really fun and, surprisingly, very easy. First you draw your design on a piece of material with pencil and then draw over it with hot wax; then you paint dye over it and wait for it to dry then you boil it so the wax comes off and your design is left white. I did a cat. It was a great day except my fingers are smarting from dropping hot wax all over them. Richard is doing another one tomorrow but I don’t think I will

Today Richard toddled off to do his second batik course – he’s actually quite good at it – and Mum & I went shopping at the Yogya Mataharis. This is REALLY big. Makes Solo’s branch look like the West End shop in Wynyard! It has McDonalds, KFC and CFC(California Fried Chicken) as well as an Emporio Armani, Athlete’s Foot, Polo Ralph Lauren and countless other excellent shops. A shopper’s dream! If only I were rich! Anyway, I finally found a pair of jeans (I need a belt but at least I’ve found a pair long enough! So short & wide!), so I’m happy.
