Just a short post to share something VERY, VERY EXCITING (at least for me). Yesterday, I arrived home to a large box on my front step, addressed to Kate Gordon Author (that’s me! Hurrah!). Inside, there were lots of the styrofoamy bubbles that are Mephy’s very favourite toy in the whole WORLD (so, therefore, got disposed of very quickly). BUT the delivery was NOT for Mephy! It was for ME and as well as many styrofoamy bubbles, there were also multiple copies of … Thyla!
Thyla is my new book, out the first of April (I know it is April Fools’ Day, but my editor has ASSURED me that Thyla WILL be coming out and this whole wonderful publication thing is NOT just a big joke at my expense). It is a paranormal mystery / romance set in Tasmania. Here is the blurb:
THYLA is a story of Tasmania: of darkness, of convicts, of devils and tigers, and of promises that stay true through the centuries. It is the story of what happened to Cat, and what Tessa really is.
Description of book
My name is Tessa. I am strong. I am brave. I do not cry. These are the only things I know for certain.
I was found in the bush, ragged as a wild thing. I have no memory – not even of how I got the long, striping slashes across my back. They make me frightened of what I might remember.
The policewoman, Connolly, found me a place in a boarding school and told me about her daughter, Cat, who went missing in the bush.
I think there is a connection between Cat, me, and the strange things going on at this school. If I can learn Cat’s story, I might discover my own – and stop it happening again.
I am immensely proud of Thyla, and I was so excited to see it in the flesh (in the paper???). It is so very beautiful. The cover is just gorgeous. It looks mysterious and intriguing – which I hope is reflected in the text – and the girl on the cover looks just how I imagined Tessa to look. It might sound really nerdy, but I also adore the font inside – particularly the chapter headings – and I am also in love with the fact that the title text is RAISED (probably not the technical term). For some reason, this is thrilling! HB is, I think, very sick of me saying, “Look! It’s raised! It’s bumpy!!!).
I am so grateful to Kimberley and Zoe at Random House for helping to make my little germ of an idea into an actual, proper book. I’m also grateful to my sounding board and unofficial editor, Leigh, for telling me my first draft was terrible and making me start again (even though I hated him at the time). Thyla would not have existed without him.
Anyway, I’m getting ahead of myself. Thyla is not out for another month. I am alternating between impatiently excited and absolutely terrified! I hope you all really like Thyla when it comes out. In the meantime, I think I will spend the next month just gazing at my beautiful books. Mephy is getting very jealous. Especially since I got rid of his bubbles.
